Version of database, V7.0 ; System type, 64-bit computer. Introduction {#sec1} ============ Key practical aspects of planning surgical procedures include the need for accurate representation of the surgical specimen in order to preserve its anatomy for post-operative evaluation, and the need for unambiguous representation of this anatomy for proper reconstruction. Photographs are the most convenient way to document anatomical structures within the specimen. A substantial database of photographs of surgical specimens is in existence; however, to our knowledge, there is no comprehensive database that catalogs the wide variety of images that are available for inspection in the surgical pathology suite. This limitation in the provision of images represents a gap in the functionality of this valuable tool for education and research. By developing a comprehensive database of photographic images, the current authors present a web-based database that can be used to search for images, access images through a simple web page, save images as JPEG files, and access images through Adobe® Acrobat® software. To simplify data entry, a drag-and-drop interface was implemented. This application is named the *Digital Pathology Image Database* (*DPID*). This application and related information may be found at the following address: . This application is designed to be used as a repository of digital images of surgical pathology specimens. The focus of this database is to catalog and display photographs of surgical specimens. This application does not replace the need for traditional images such as macroscopic photographs and actual dissected specimens. Methods {#sec2} ======= Design of the Database {#sec2.1} ---------------------- The database consists of a set of photographs stored in the Imaging Information Management System (IIMS) database. The IIMS database is a Microsoft SQL Server database that contains images and metadata from the current authors' surgical pathology laboratory. The IIMS database contains approximately 1,600 photographs from over 500 specimens and is searchable by specimen name and date, type of specimen, and procedure associated with the specimen. The images are displayed in a web page designed using the Internet Explorer (IE) web browser. The photographic images are displayed in thumbnail and window display modes, and are searchable by specimen name and date, type of specimen, and procedure associated with the specimen. The location of the image is indicated within the web page. Individual images can be downloaded to the
